Movies 2010: Year end wrap up

with 2 comments

2010 is about to end in a week and this post is about some other movies that I watched this year and missed a mention in my blog. The reviews are ordered based on ‘likability’. The most liked movies are at first followed by the next one.

How to train your dragon (2010) : A feel good movie . The movie is about a young viking  who how_to_trainbefriends a dragon and solves an age old rivalry between  Vikings and dragons. A very simple story with a subtle message. I would rate it as one of my best movies of 2010. Thanks Raj for the reco!

Avatar (2009) : How could I miss James Cameroons magnum opus. Before Avatar, 3D (at least in India) was relegated to kids movies.  Kudos to him for bringing 3D back into mainstream.
AvatarThis movie was a visual treat .It would have been nice if I had the pause and rewind button of the IMAX 3D theatre.  Some wow moments just passed so fast !

Its really commendable the director could keep his focus of 12 long years and  still make a movie of this scale. One sore point was that the story line was not so good ..but the visual treat makes us forget about anything else.

Inception (2010) : I had a lot of expectation on Inception as it was from Chris Nolan who inceptiongave movies like TDK and The Prestige . The trailers gave a hint on what to expect .And yeah the movie did not disappoint. It was a nice movie to watch, but it is not in the same league as the earlier movies. One of the good ones of 2010 but not one of the  best movies of Chris Nolan.
Inglorious Basterds(2009):  There is a certain style to Quentin Tarantino’s movies and his characters. I still remember Samuel Jackson’s rhetoric just before he gets on a killing spree.
IngloriousSet on Nazi Germany,Tarantino brings in a different take on history. Loved this movie and the characters .Special thanks to  the director for keeping the blood quantity less:)

Sherlock Holmes (2009) : A 2010 adaptation of Sherlock Holmes.The plot/screen play is good.
SherlockHolmesThis is one of the ‘masala movies’ of 2010 .A one time watch if you like adventure kinds.
ps: There is a UK adaptation of Sherlock Holmes (season 2 is in the making) .It is a TV series
but much better than the movie.Highly recommended if you are into detective movies.

Shutter Island (2010) : This is yet another Martin Scorsese/Dicaprio movie after The Aviator .

ShutterIsland A psychological thriller set in the 1950’s . The movie should be watched in large screen ..and may be that’s why I couldn’t appreciate the movie much.

Special movies:

Could be called offbeat or classic movies. These may not cater to everyone’s expectations.

One flew Over the Cuckoos Nest (1975) : I have heard a lot about this movie . Its a mundane story about the inmates of a mental  asylum but what sets is apart is the performance by the OneFlewactors. JackNicolson’s acting is extraordinary. But this one is for movie buffs.  If you dont like serious/slow moving movies,  do not try this .

The Boy in the Striped Pajamas (2008) : This movie is about the son of a high ranking Nazi official and his  friendship with another boy of his age but living in one of the Jewish concentration camps.

BoyInI like the script of the movie much. Also the portrayal of the boy and his experience dealing with  concentration camps etc is well done. A thought provoking movie with a strong message .

அங்காடித் தெரு (2010) (Market Street) : I had huge expectations on this movie after seeing the previous movie from the director . Angadi Theru is about the life of people working at a shopping mall their daily hardships, and all the little things in their life. It is a very realistic portrayal ..and that to some extent turned me off. Veyil was much better story wise and also in the fun quotient.

  1. Nice roundup Sujai.

Surprised to see Toy Story 3 missing from the list though. If you havent, it’s a MUST watch before end of 2010. I’m sure it will give your current favorite some serious competition!
